Sony Applies for Triangular and Hexagonal Pixels Patent

Sony Alpha Rumors quotes Japanese-language Egami blog describing the new Sony patent on triangular and hexagonal pixels with quite complex color arrangements:

RGBCMY 6-color arrangement
RGBCMYWW 8-color arrangement

The main advantage of the new design is said to be: "The benefits of the combined use of CMY filters, an RGB filter spectral sensitivity characteristics , so different, is that you can improve the color reproducibility by performing image processing well."

  1. Very nice. With hexagonal structures achieving high packing densities, and strong biological inspirations, I'd like to see more structures such as these available from foundries without the large number of DCR violations usually incurred.
